Gender-affirming care in the U.S.has come under attack from nearly every angle. Whether it’s politicians trying to ban medical practices in their states, or companies excluding it from their insurance coverage, access to medical care for trans people seems hard to come by these days.Â
Luckily, some companies have made it a priority to include gender-affirming care in their health insurance plans. This means employees can feel supported by their company in their identity, safe at work, and better able to complete tasks and become better employees. Here are some of the companies who include gender-affirming care in their employee health insurance coverage, according to Inhersight.
Adobe • Global tech company, Adobe, provides employees coverage for gender-affirming care including gender-confirmation surgery, breast augmentation, hormone therapy, facial feminization, masculinization surgery, voice surgery, hair removal, reconstruction and more.
PayPal • This financial tech company covers the cost of lodging and travel for gender confirmation surgeries, hormone replacement therapies, voice modification surgeries, mastectomy or breast implants and more.Â
IBM • Another global tech giant covers gender-confirmation surgery and hormone therapies.Â
Spotify • Music streaming platform covers masculinization and feminization therapies.Â
Taskrabbit • Not only has Taskrabbit been recognized for its pro-LGBTQ+ support groups and programming, but this freelance labor posting platform also provides health insurance coverage for gender-affirming care for company employees. Those who use the app to find a job, however, do not have access to healthcare through the platform.Â
Squarespace • One of the premiere website building platforms makes it easier to build a platform to promote your work or interests, and also covers company employees’ access to gender-confirmation services and procedures, along with providing an employee assistance program offering confidential professional guidance and counseling services.Â
Netflix: Video streaming service Netflix provides employees with insurance coverage for gender-,confirmation surgeries, hormone therapies and up to $10,000 in travel reimbursement for gender affirming care.Â
These and other companies provide a glimmer of hope for those who are transitioning by offering medical coverage for gender-affirming care, hormone therapies, and travel expenses. Some companies who may provide access to gender-affirming care in medical plans, however, might not support LGBTQ+ employees on other fronts. It’s important to know where your company’s funds are going and try your best to support companies that take care of their LGBTQ+ employees and do not provide funding to anti-LGBTQ+ causes.Â
